It's been months since the Bengals allowed Trey Hendrickson to seek permission for a trade, but the stance has been that they would like to work out a deal.
Hendrickson has been vocal about the circus that has been the negotiations, and he and the team have remained far apart on a new deal.
Well, with the season on the doorstep and the impasse as firm as ever, the Bengals may finally take Trey up on his request.
"With contract talks at an impasse, the Bengals are listening to trade offers for perennial Pro Bowler Trey Hendrickson, per me & Tom Pelissero," wrote NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport on X-Twitter on Sunday. "It’s unclear if the NFL sack leader will be playing elsewhere in 2025, and a trade will be a real challenge. But time will tell."
The Bengals have resolved every major issue over the past year. They locked up both Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, and they solved the Shemar Stewart issue. But Trey Hendrickson has been the headache that won't go away from the Bengals' perspective, and Cincinnati has been a bad partner from his viewpoint.
Hendrickson skipped camp for the first couple of days, before showing up and doing his best to be involved with the team without risking his future earnings. He aimed not to be a distraction, and honestly, it had been pretty quiet until Sunday.
“What I’m not going to do is, as best as I can, avoid being a distraction,” Hendrickson told reporters after practice in late July. “I want to help the guys. You know, the guys that have helped me along the way, Demario Davis, Cam Jordan, even Sam Hubbard helped me a lot when I was here. So to be that right now, that’s what’s most important. And this narrative will kind of iron itself out as we continue to progress towards the season.”
Except the narrative hasn't been ironed out, and the season is only getting closer. But let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Just because the Bengals are listening doesn't mean they are willing to be a good dance partner.
Trades obviously take two to tango, and the Bengals are likely seeking valuable draft capital for the future, and a player that can at least fill Hendrickson's void in the interim.
If they can find said partner, remains to be seen.
