Trey Smith, Kansas City Chiefs reach agreement on record-breaking contract extension

The Kansas City chiefs and right guard Trey Smith have reached an agreement on a four-year, $94 million with $70 million guaranteed, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. The deal makes him the highest-paid guard in NFL history.

Smith and the Chiefs have agreed to a deal at the 11th hour, as Tuesday is the post-franchise tag deadline for teams to negotiate a contract extension with an impending unrestricted free agent. Both sides got it done, and Kansas City now has its two stalwarts on the offensive line — the other being center Creed Humphrey — under contract for the foreseeable future. Humphrey is also the highest-paid player at his position.

Smith, a 2021 sixth-round pick out of Tennessee, has ascended to become of the best guards in all of football. He has started and played in 67 out of a possible 68 games since entering the league, earning his first Pro Bowl nod this past season. Smith ranked 14th among guards with a 78.8 overall grade, according to Pro Football Focus. He did not allow a sack in 708 pass block snaps. Smith did, however, surrender a sack apiece in Kansas City’s final two playoff games.

Chiefs lock up Trey Smith, continue to invest in offensive line

The Chiefs’ offensive line is expensive. In addition to Smith and Humphrey, right tackle Jawaan Taylor is making $20 million annually. Left tackle Jaylon Moore is on the books for $15 million per year. If it helps keep quarterback Patrick Mahomes upright throughout the year and leads to another long playoff run, it will be more than worth it. Mahomes certainly approves of Smith’s new deal.
