Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman has raised concerns about the team’s offensive execution following back to back losses. While quarterback Dak Prescott has faced criticism for his recent performances, Aikman believes the problems extend beyond the quarterback.
The Hall of Fame quarterback pointed to breakdowns in pass protection and inconsistent route running from Dallas’ wide receivers. His comments add to a week of scrutiny for the Cowboys as they prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night.
Prescott struggled during Dallas’ loss to Green Bay, throwing two interceptions as the offense continued to search for answers. However, Aikman believes the quarterback faced circumstances that made it difficult for him to succeed.
“I don’t think it was a good game for everybody,” Aikman explained. “I think you could have put any quarterback out there on the field last week and the results would have been the same. They had way too many free runners on the quarterback.”
Aikman noted that the Packers created pressure through both extra rushers and four-man pass rushes, leaving Prescott with limited time to make decisions. He also pointed to the changing defensive looks that complicated the quarterback’s task.
The former Cowboys quarterback’s assessment suggests Dallas must address its protection issues rather than placing all the blame on Prescott. With another challenging divisional matchup approaching, the offensive line will need to give its quarterback more time to locate open targets.
Aikman’s strongest criticism centered on Dallas’ receivers and their route execution. Asked whether the wideouts had been running crisp routes in response to former Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci describing the offense as “lazy,” Aikman expressed frustration with what he has seen.
“No, and they haven’t [ran crisp routes] in a while,” Aikman said.
Aikman then delivered an especially harsh assessment of one unnamed receiver’s performance.
“I won’t name names either, but there’s one particular player I was embarrassed. It’s the worst performance I’ve ever seen from a wide receiver on a football field.”
Although Aikman did not identify the player, his remarks followed head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s public challenge to George Pickens regarding his blocking effort. Schottenheimer emphasized that Pickens must contribute to the running game by blocking defensive backs and supporting his teammates.
The connection between the two sets of comments has drawn attention to Pickens, but Aikman did not explicitly name him as the receiver he criticized.
This is not the first time Aikman has questioned Dallas’ receiving corps. During the 2024 season, he criticized the group’s route running and specifically called out CeeDee Lamb’s execution.
The latest comments arrive at a critical point for the Cowboys. Dallas enters Monday night’s game against Philadelphia at 2-4 after dropping consecutive contests, but the NFC East remains within reach given the division’s struggles.
To turn things around, Dallas needs better pass protection, more precise routes and stronger overall execution. Prescott cannot consistently overcome immediate pressure, and the passing game will struggle if receivers fail to create separation.
