Troy Aikman Would Consider Cowboys Gig

Recent weeks have been filled with speculation about Troy Aikman’s future. It increasingly appears as though his days on  Monday Night Football are numbered, with his contract set to expire after the Super Bow.

Aikman will call this year’s championship game alongside longtime broadcast partner Joe Buck. But while Buck has a new contract in place with ESPN, Aikman’s future beyond 2026 is unclear. The Hall of Fame quarterback’s recent remarks have acknowledged the likelihood of a departure in the near future.

If Aikman’s long-running broadcasting career is to end after this season, his next gig could take the form of working with an NFL team. The three-time Super Bowl winner consulted for the Dolphins during their general manager and head coach searches. Aikman was then present in Miami’s draft room, continuing his informal role with the team. Mark Maske of Front Office Sports reports it is unknown if Aikman is still working as a Dolphins consultant at this point, though, noting there is not any official agreement in place.

A role with the Cowboys could be something to watch for moving forward. When speaking at this week’s owners’ meeting, Jerry Jones said (h/t Maske) Aikman would represent a strong candidate for serving an NFL front office on a full-time basis. An official partnership between the two could receive consideration.

“This week he said some really kind things, which meant a lot to me, quite honestly,” Aikman said. “So, yeah, I would welcome any conversation with Jerry. And quite honestly I don’t know if there would be or if there ever would be an opportunity. But if Jerry came to me and felt that, in his heart, I could lend some services that would help make them better, I would. I’d have a hard time not taking a good look at that.”

Dallas’ first draft pick after Jones purchased the franchise, Aikman spent his entire 12-year career as a member of the Cowboys. His post-playing days have been defined in large part by his work as a broadcaster, although that could be coming to an end shortly. It remains to be seen if a new ESPN contract can be agreed to, or if Aikman will line up an analyst position at another network.

Failing that, a position of some kind within an NFL front office could become something to watch for. Aikman’s willingness to consider a Cowboys job may be a storyline to follow during this year’s hiring cycle.
