Tua Tagovailoa injury update: Latest on status of Dolphins QB after leaving game vs. Bills
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sport

Tua Tagovailoa had to leave Thursday’s game against the Buffalo Bills after taking a hit in the third quarter. After all of the head injuries the Miami Dolphins quarterback has taken in his career, seeing him go down again was a scary moment.

An update has been provided on Tagovailoa by the team, announcing he has been ruled out for the rest of the game with a concussion. Skylar Thompson is now in at quarterback as the Dolphins look to fight back against their AFC East rivals.

“Injury Update | Tua Tagovailoa has been ruled out with a concussion,” the official Miami Dolphins X account said.

Sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung provided more information shortly after Miami’s statement, saying it did not too long for them to rule Tagovailoa out. Tagovailoa was shown walking under his own power back to the locker room but the Dolphins training staff knew the problem quickly.

“The Dolphins tell us Tua Tagovailoa will not return to this game,” Hartung said early in the fourth quarter. “He has been ruled out with a concussion. They were able to determine that just six minutes after he left the field and went into the locker room.”

Tagovailoa has a lengthy history of concussions in the NFL, with his first being suffered in Week 3 of the 2022 season against Buffalo. After being cleared to play four days later, also on Thursday Night Football, an ambulance had to be brought out for Tagovailoa after taking a hit to the head vs. the Cincinnati Bengals.

His status became a big talking point around the sport, wondering how he was cleared to play in the game. The moment being in a primetime slot certainly did not help.

Last year was an injury-free one for the quarterback. He played and started in all 17 games, leading Miami to its first 11-win season since 2008 and most importantly, the NFL playoffs. Everyone was hoping similar results would take place in 2024 but there is a concussion to deal with moving forward.

Miami does have an extended period off before their next game. Playing on Thursday means an extra three days of rest for everyone on the roster. Sunday, Sept. 22 against the Seattle Seahawks will be the next time the Dolphins take the field, traveling out West.

More information about Tagovailoa will surely come when head coach Mike McDaniel speaks to the media postgame.
