Tua Tagovailoa was carted off the field in the second quarter of the 'Thursday Night Football' matchup between his Miami Dolphins and the Cincinnati Bengals.
Tua took a huge sack from nose tackle Josh Tupou and was unfortunately thrown back on his head and neck. It was a clean but nasty hit, made worse by the fact that Tupou inadvertently rag-dolled the back of Tagovailoa's head into the ground.
Unfortunately, injuries like this are a part of football and the good news is the Dolphins did provide an update saying that Tua "is conscious and has movement in all his extremities."
That hasn't stopped Twitter from sounding off on Tagovailoa's injury, though. The quarterback took a nasty hit to the head in last Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills. He appeared dizzy and stumbled while trying to get back to the huddle, which prompted the Dolphins to take him out of the game in the first half. Tagovailoa eventually returned to the game after being cleared of a concussion, but that didn't stop the criticism of his return or the NFLPA from investigating whether or not the Dolphins actually followed concussion protocol with their quarterback.
Early indications are that the Dolphins did follow protocol, but it was hard to watch Tagovailoa seize up on the field Thursday night and now think about the hit he sustained last week and how it all fits together.
Twitter exploded about that topic, while others simply wished Tagovailoa their best.
Amazon just did an entire halftime segment on Tua without mentioning that Tua was tested for a concussion 4 days ago or that the NFLPA requested an investigation.

I can only imagine the pain #Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa's parents are feeling. They came to tonight's game to watch their son play a game of football. Just horrible all around.

As founder of the Traumatic Brain Injury Task Force I’m praying for Tua Tagovailoa. Concussions are devastating and as a nation we must do more to protect people with brain injury - that starts with our pro sports leagues. That didn’t happen tonight. https://t.co/0mgY7ny0NY

There are a lot of questions that need to be answered about the Dolphins decision to allow Tua Tagovailoa to play tonight

The fact this was considered a “back injury” a week ago is still insane
Potentially life-altering factors on the line. Major step back for player safety pic.twitter.com/GODktj6uKS
Tua Tagovailoa's obvious concussion from last week will be under even more intense scrutiny following this. The NFLPA has already launched an investigation. Let's hope Tua is alright. pic.twitter.com/pWYss5XUdZ

Anyone who didn’t think Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion last week was either incredibly naive, incompetent or just plain stupid. It was huge negligence on behalf of the Miami Dolphins which was confirmed tonight once & for all in front of everyone to see. Very, very sad.

Been watching football a long time. Seeing Tua Tagovailoa’s body after that hit is one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever witnessed.

That’s a serious injury . Tua shouldn’t have been out there with Sunday Thursday turn around. Sometimes players need protecting from themselves. Dolphins failed Tua

I take no pleasure in being right. Pray for Tua. We saw this coming. Get angry. Get involved with @ConcussionLF to make sure the @NFL can't do this again. https://t.co/qbZLlgvk5S

Very thankful today for the Patriots' trainers/medical staff for the way they handled my concussion in 2011.

I was out on my feet, they took it seriously, and I spent the year on IR. They saved me from myself. I would've rushed back if they let me. They didn't.
Prayers for Tua.
Truth be told Tua should probably never have been playing.

He displayed neurological trauma last week, we disregarded it, labeled it a “back injury” & let him back in the game.
Now, the whole world watch as he lay on the field helpless. When will we put player safety FIRST!
Tua 4 days ago. The Dolphins will have to answer for this. https://t.co/DlNIVMPZmC

Can’t believe that the Miami training staff let Tua play this week after EVERYONE seen him unstable and falling over himself 4 DAYS AGO..
— Tyus Bowser™ (@tbowser23) September 30, 2022
The NFL and the Dolphins should be under serious investigation for how they handled Tua these past few days. This is absolutely sickening and inexcusable. We need to see some very severe consequences, if malpractice is proven.
— Saad Yousuf (@SaadYousuf126) September 30, 2022
There are so many reasons Tua shouldn’t have played tonight, and so many people - adults who know better - that allowed it.

There will be lawyers.
Prayers up man..

Stop showing the replays. Please.

Hopefully Tua makes a full and complete recovery.
