With mandatory minicamp in the rearview mirror, the Chicago Bears sent the majority of the roster home for the summer until training camp, outside of a few more voluntary OTA sessions.
The coaching staff intended to use these remaining days for the younger guys to get more one-on-one training with their positional coaches but two names were still noticeably absent from the field.
Those players were first-round rookie tight end Colston Loveland and second-round rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III.
The last time we saw Burden on the grass was during rookie minicamp before suffering an apparent soft tissue injury that has since left him sidelined.
For any player, missing time during minicamp is a lost opportunity with a new offense being put in place, especially playing for a head coach like Ben Johnson who has been very detail-oriented during practice sessions.
While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Johnson went into depth on what his rookie wide receiver has been missing by not being out there on the field.
"He misses a lot," Johnson said specifically about Burden. "Anytime you're not out there, if you're in the training room when the rest of the guys are practicing, you're losing valuable time. Valuable time with the coaches, valuable reps with your teammates, the ability to build the trust that we're talking about."

That includes trust from the coaching staff, trust from the quarterback throwing you the ball looking to start building a connection, and even with other offensive players.
"It's not just the coaching staff having trust in you doing the right thing over and over. But, it's also your teammates," Johnson added. "They gotta be out there, they gotta see you do it, they gotta know that the guy right and left of them that they are going to do the right things and make the plays when called upon..."
"It's a shame that he got dinged up because for a young player, it's really where you get the most reps."
As for some good news, Johnson said he fully expects Burden to be back on the field when the rest of the team reports back for training camp, but the same message goes for first-round pick Colston Loveland, who's still rehabbing from shoulder surgery.
"It's really just diving into that playbook," Loveland said about his current plan of attack for practice. "It's one thing to know it and then go out there and do it in real time, so it's just the walk-through reps and the mental reps. Those are huge and crucial. My teammates are doing a great job when I'm asking questions, they're very coachable."

At each position group, DJ Moore and Cole Kmet have shared that Burden and Loveland have been active when it comes to shadowing the veterans and learning from afar. But, like Loveland said, it's a different thing to actually be out there.
It's gotta be frustrating to see your top two selections falling behind due to injury and hopefully we can see both players out there and working by training camp.
