Two Packers legends are now one step away from the Pro Football Hall of Fame

The Pro Football Hall of Fame decided the list of five finalists for the class of seniors, coaches, and contributors who may get in next year. Two of them are Green Bay Packers legends, and there are strong cases for both.

Former head coach Mike Holmgren and former wide receiver Sterling Sharpe are now finalists. The other three are former players Maxie Baughan and Jim Tyrer, plus NFL co-founder Ralph Hay. Three of the five who get 80% or more of the votes will be inducted.

ESPN senior writer Don Van Natta Jr. reported the news first.

Mike Holmgren

The coach worked in the NFL from 1986 to 2008. He was the head coach of the Packers from 1992 to 1998, reaching two Super Bowls and winning one, after the 1996 season, the third Super Bowl title in franchise history.

Holmgren was a quarterbacks coach, then an offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, where he won two other rings.

After his time with the Packers, Holmgren was the head coach, vice president of football operations, and general manager for the Seattle Seahawks, where he reached another Super Bowl.

The coach retired in 2012 after three seasons as the Cleveland Browns' team president.

Sterling Sharpe

The wide receiver played only six seasons in the NFL, and that's probably the reason why he hasn't gotten in yet. However, the 1988 first-round pick was one of the most prolific offensive players in football until a neck abnormality ended his career.

He had five 1,000+ receiving-yard seasons in the league, including First-Team All-Pro selections in 1989, 1992, and 1993. Sharpe was the NFL receiving yards leader in 1992 and the touchdowns leader in 1992 and 1994.

Both Holmgren and Sharpe are already members of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame. Perhaps, their next destination is Canton.
