Tyjae Spears' Projected Role in Titans Offense for 2025 NFL Season

The Tennessee Titans drafted running back Tyjae Spears from Tulane in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Heading into the 2025 NFL season, Spears is a name that many may have forgotten about.

There was a mix of skepticism and optimism when he was initially selected, as Spears does not have an ACL in his left knee, which caused concerns about his durability. However, his highlights showed that he was tough, had good quickness and speed, and had a knack for making players.

In his first season with the Titans in 2023, he was the perfect complement for Derrick Henry. He accumulated 453 yards rushing in just 100 carries, along with 52 receptions for 385 yards. With one year under his belt and with Henry leaving for the Baltimore Ravens, most thought that Spears would continue to take steps forward.

Unfortunately, that did not happen, as the Titans acquired veteran running back Tony Pollard last offseason. In 2024, the plan was for Spears and Pollard to split the duties a little bit more; however, Spears suffered an injury-riddled second season.

He ended up being the backup to Pollard, who had the best statistical season of his career in 2024. Now heading into his third season, it is a bit unknown where Spears fits into the rotation at running back for the Titans.

Titans head coach Brian Callahan spoke about Spears' potential role when he was discussing the running back rotation at a press conference in late May.

“I think in a perfect world, it’s a healthier division of labor [than last season]," Callahan said. "I like, really, both of those players a lot. I think we can do a better job of managing that load so they both play a little more evenly.”

Based on this statement, it sounds like Spears is going to have a chance to make an impact this season. With his combination of elusiveness, speed and ability to make plays, he could give the Titans another weapon they need around rookie quarterback Cam Ward.

The biggest thing that could hold Spears back is not staying healthy this season. The more he does and the more effective he is in his touches, the more he will be a part of the offense. With an upgraded offensive line, Spears could have an opportunity to do special things for the Titans.

If Spears can be effective, that could keep Pollard fresher as the season progresses. Last season, he limped towards the finish line as he dealt with numerous injuries, but Spears has a chance to remedy that in 2025.
