Jets head coach Aaron Glenn met with the media after yesterday’s practice and provided an update on Tyrod Taylor. The backup quarterback had arthroscopic surgery on his balky knee and will be out for the remainder of the preseason. At this point in time, the team isn’t even sure he’ll be ready for week 1.

For the immediate future, the team might add a street free agent to give themselves another camp arm. But for the remainder of this season, what they do with the QB depth chart could tell us just how much they like their chances to compete.
When it comes to Taylor, there has never been any question as to whether or not he can be a solid starter who can win you some games. For many years now, his inability to stay on the field has been his biggest issue.
And now, despite having not yet stepped on the field in a game of any kind, Taylor is out for several weeks.
If you’re the New York Jets, and you genuinely believe you have a chance to make a playoff run, you simply can’t carry two quarterbacks with one of them being as brittle as Taylor is.
Since 2015, Taylor has dealt with an MCL sprain, a groin tear, multiple concussions, a patella sprain, a dislocated finger, punctured lung, a hamstring strain, a wrist injury, and a rib strain against the Jets that laned him on IR.
With this being the case, the Jets have to assume Tyrod Taylor won’t be able to give them more than a handful of games if something were to happen to starter Justin Fields.
So while it’s not all that common for teams to carry a third quarterback in today’s NFL, the Jets should strongly consider it.
