Update emerges on Baker Mayfield after gruesome finger injury

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have to soldier on without Baker Mayfield for the foreseeable future.

Mayfield suffered an ugly-looking finger injury late in Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. The 31-year-old got hurt while fending off defenders with under two minutes to play at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

The two-time Pro Bowler scrambled to keep the play alive but ended up throwing the game-ending interception in the 23-16 loss (video here). Mayfield did not take the field when the Buccaneers got the ball back with 33 seconds left.

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles shared an update on Mayfield’s injury after the game. He said his starting quarterback was diagnosed with a dislocated right thumb and is scheduled to get an MRI. Bowles could not give a definitive answer when asked about the possibility of Mayfield’s thumb being broken.

Mayfield went 17-of-34 for 217 yards with a touchdown and an interception in Sunday’s contest. If Mayfield is forced to miss any time, rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels may be thrust into a starting role sooner than expected. The Buccaneers may also be in the market for more veteran QB depth in the short term.

The Week 3 loss was Tampa Bay’s third consecutive one-score defeat to start the 2026 season.
