So far, 2025 has been a good year for United States women's soccer star Sophia Wilson.
In January, Wilson, whose maiden name is Sophia Smith, married Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson. The pair have been together for several years dating back to their days as undergraduates at Stanford University. Wednesday morning, Wilson and her husband announced they are expecting their first child.
They revealed the news in a joint post on Instagram.
"life just keeps getting sweeter ," Sophia Wilson captioned the post.
The Portland Thorns, Wilson's NWSL team, offered their congratulations in a social media post.
"We are overjoyed to share that @sophsssmith and her husband Michael are expecting their first child!," Portland said. "The Thorns are proud to support her through this incredible new chapter."
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NWSL Draft, Wilson was named the league’s MVP in 2022, when she produced 15 goals and three assists in 20 league appearances for the NWSL champs.
Overall, Wilson has scored 45 goals in 80 NWSL matches over the last four seasons.
At the international level, Smith has 58 caps with the USWNT since 2020. She's scored 24 goals in those appearances, including 11 in 17 matches in 2022, when she was named U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year.
A member of the 2023 Women's World Cup team and 2024 Olympics squad, Smith won gold in Paris with the USWNT last summer. She scored three goals in the event, all against Germany, with two coming in a group play match and the third in the United States' semifinal win.
Motherhood will force Smith to put her soccer career on hold for a bit, but the news is still incredibly exciting for her and her husband.
We're wishing them the best and hope a happy and healthy baby is in their future.
