They say NFL stands for “Not For Long,” and if there is one position on the field where that rings the absolute truest, it is the modern-day linebacker. That is why when news broke on Wednesday afternoon that Logan Wilson was officially calling it a career at the ripe old age of 29, it shouldn’t have been a massive shock.
Yet, there is always a tinge of melancholy when a guy who can clearly still play decides he has had enough. Wilson is walking away on his own terms, choosing his long-term health and his family over grinding out another training camp on the wrong side of the roster bubble.

If you look back at the 2020 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals taking a kid out of Wyoming in the third round didn’t exactly break the internet. Wilson was viewed as a solid, instinctive football player, but nobody was predicting he would become the defensive anchor for a franchise desperately trying to climb out of the league’s basement.
But Wilson brought a relentless, blue-collar work ethic to the Jungle. He wasn’t just a tackler; he was a true three-down linebacker. In a league that ruthlessly exposes linebackers who can’t cover, Wilson was a revelation. During his incredible 76-game run with Cincinnati, he racked up 541 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and an absurd 11 interceptions.
The business side of football eventually comes for everyone. During the 2025 season, Wilson was traded to the Dallas Cowboys. He suited up for seven games in Dallas, recording 24 tackles and forcing a fumble. He proved he could still hit, still diagnose a play, and still contribute to a locker room.
When the Cowboys released him last month, the typical NFL script dictated that Wilson would wait by the phone. He could have easily signed a veteran minimum contract with a contender in August, acting as an insurance policy. He could have bounced from practice squad to active roster, clinging to the shield for one more paycheck.
Instead, he looked at the board and decided he had won the game. Why spend your 30th birthday getting trucked by a rookie running back in the sweltering summer heat when you can be at home with your family?
It is always refreshing to see a player walk away with his faculties intact, a bank account full, and a lifetime of memories. Football gave the Wyoming kid more than he ever could have imagined, but Wilson gave the game everything his body had to offer.
He retires as a cornerstone of one of the most beloved Bengals teams in franchise history. He walks away with his head held high, leaving behind a highlight reel of bone-crunching hits and clutch interceptions.
