The NFL Draft took place over the weekend, as over 200 young players heard their names called all across the country. The league is ready to welcome in the new rookie class, and that means spots will have to be made on rosters throughout the NFL.
One team made a significant decision this week, releasing a veteran quarterback from the roster just days after the conclusion of the draft.
The New Orleans Saints are releasing journeyman quarterback Ben DiNucci, just a few days after the 2025 NFL Draft.
The Saints selected former Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round on Friday, and are releasing DiNucci with another quarterback on the roster.
DiNucci has been in the NFL since 2020, when he was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round out of James Madison. He played in three games and made one start as a rookie in relief of an injured Dak Prescott.
He joined the XFL's Seattle Sea Dragons in 2023 and revitalized his career in spring football. DiNucci led the XFL in passing yards, attempts and completions, while finishing second in passing touchdowns.
Following his time with the Sea Dragons, DiNucci made his way back to the NFL with the Denver Broncos.
After a short stint with the Buffalo Bills, DiNucci would join the New Orleans Saints near the end of the 2024 season. He signed a reserves contract with the team in January, but has now been released as Shough comes in as the team's new quarterback.
Shough could compete for the starting role in his first season, as Carr's future is up in the air following an injury setback.
Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler are also on the Saints' roster ahead of the new season, setting up a potential quarterback competition in training camp if Carr is unable to play this year.
The decision will ultimately come down to new Saints head coach Kellen Moore, who helped the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl last season as their offensive coordinator. We'll also find out where DiNucci goes after being released by yet another NFL team.
