The Minnesota Vikings have a new sheriff in town. Signing Kyler Murray sent a clear message, and it may have marked the beginning of the end of the J.J. McCarthy era in the Twin Cities.
Barring a surprise, the former No. 1 pick will win the starting quarterback job in Minnesota.
And with Carson Wentz also in the mix, one can only wonder where McCarthy stands in this situation.
Considering that, NFL analyst John Middlekauff predicted that McCarthy might not even be on the roster for the start of the season.
“I don’t think J.J. McCarthy is going to win the job,” Middlekauff said on his "3 & Out With John Middlekauff" podcast. “To me, the question is whether J.J. McCarthy will even be on the team in Week 1. In recent examples, Trey Lance wasn’t on the team. And if you’re going with Kyler Murray, do you really want J.J. in there?”
While that's a bit of a wild suggestion, he's right. History isn't on McCarthy's side.
Moreover, it might be hard to rebuild trust between him and head coach Kevin O'Connell if he moves on with Murray going forward.
Also, the Vikings parted ways with former general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who was his biggest advocate and the one who drafted him in the first place.
McCarthy missed his rookie season with an injury and seven games in year two with multiple ailments. He was erratic and looked unprepared when he did play.
That said, he has some impressive physical tools that could ultimately help him be a starting-caliber NFL quarterback, and there are also positive reports about his work ethic.
Still, the Vikings are built to win now, and they may not be able to afford waiting for him and letting him grow through his mistakes.
As such, they may have no choice but to cut their losses and find him a new home before having him there only becomes a distraction.
