Vikings loss to the Chargers exposes multiple weaknesses that will haunt them for the remainder of the season

The Los Angeles Chargers embarrassed the Minnesota Vikings on multiple levels this past Thursday night by a score of 37-10.

After the Vikings got a pick-six that was overturned inexplicably, it felt like the Vikings were just out of sync the rest of the way. They got outplayed and outcoached in just about every way, and head coach Kevin O'Connell said as much after the game. Where do the Vikings go from here? It's a big question, because there are so many issues with this team. The game continued to expose those weaknesses, and they will loom large as the season goes on.

Minnesota Vikings have multiple weaknesses exposed

Vikings can't stop the run

This has been a huge factor in the Vikings season so far. They struggled to stop the run multiple times this season, and the two games they were good at doing so were a 48-10 blowout over the Cincinnati Bengals and when they sold out to stop Saquon Barkely. In doing so, Jalen Hurts torched the Vikings defense through the air.

With a poor interior offensive line, the Chargers dominated on the ground. They had a positive EPA/play at 0.02 and a 43% success rate with their 207 yards on the ground. It was brutal to watch them get pushed around again on the ground this season.

Carson Wentz isn't good enough

Over the last 30 years of Vikings football, the backup quarterback has been a major theme. Of the Vikings' four NFC Championship Game appearances, two of those teams were led by backups with Randall Cunningham in 1998 and Case Keenum in 2017. After winning his first start against the Cincinnati Bengals, questions started circulating about whether or not Wentz will be the guy for the rest of the season.

After the last two games, all of those questions have been quieted. He was brutal across the board. While Wentz only threw the ball 27 times, he got sacked on five dropbacks and hit on five others. He wasn't trusting what he was seeing, and when he did, the throws were often off the mark, including his interceptions, where he sailed a wide-open Justin Jefferson. When you can't do the little things right, it adds up, and while Wentz was a trooper hanging in there with his left shoulder in disarray, his performance is not up to par.

No discipline

Under O'Connell, this has always been a well-coached team. They are prepared to handle anything that is thrown at them. On Thursday night, they looked anything but, and O'Connell admitted as such after the game.

“We got outplayed. We got outcoached. There are no excuses. Injuries short week, whatever it is that is not in any way, shape or form, our standard of what we want to put on the field,” said O’Connell. “This is not a bury the tape kind of time for our organization. This is a watch it, view it, own it. Every coach, every player, and it starts with me. I did not have our team prepared to play.”

The Vikings had eight penalties for 66 yards on the day, and they came at inopportune times, including a holding penalty on the opening kickoff of the game. They are still getting to the line of scrimmage late, which is causing a litany of problems and setting them back. It's hard to get anything going when you continue to shoot yourself in the foot.

Pass rush struggles to finish

The Vikings are finding a way to get to the quarterback, but you can't just get to the quarterback. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores has a difficult challenge ahead of him in trying to fix the pass rush. It's bad enough that the Vikings aren't getting pressure enough when they send pressure, but they can't finish when they get into the backfield.

Against the Chargers on Thursday night, Herbert dropped back 34 times, and the Vikings tallied 28 pressures. They got just two sacks on the day, and that's a big problem. You need to get home and finish when you pressure the quarterback. Jonathan Greenard continues to get his hand on quarterbacks but can't take them down. The Vikings have 140 pressures this season to just 18 sacks. That sack number needs to improve for how much they are impacting the quarterback.
