Vikings Make New Roster Move Following Jamal Adams Injury

The Minnesota Vikings made a difficult roster adjustment Monday by placing veteran Jamal Adams on injured reserve, ending his season after a serious leg injury suffered in the team’s preseason opener.

Adams tore the tendon in his right quadriceps during Saturday’s contest against the New York Giants. The non-contact injury occurred early in the second quarter while he was in pass coverage, forcing him to leave the field on a cart.

The former All-Pro safety had joined the Vikings in late July. Team officials brought him in to strengthen a safety group that lost longtime standout Harrison Smith during the offseason.Adams, selected sixth overall in an earlier draft, spent the full 2025 campaign with the Las Vegas Raiders. He started four games there before signing with Minnesota in hopes of contributing this year.

Instead, he will miss the entire 2026 season. The Vikings filled his spot by adding cornerback Bryce Phillips, who had been available after a brief stint elsewhere.

“The Vikings have signed CB @brycephillipsbp and placed LB Jamal Adams on IR,” the team’s official account stated Monday.

Phillips entered the NFL this past offseason as an undrafted free agent out of San Diego State. He began training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs before the team released him to clear space for the return of defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah.

Ogbah had recorded 5.5 sacks during the Chiefs’ first Super Bowl title under Patrick Mahomes and coach Andy Reid in 2019. That move left Phillips looking for a new opportunity, which arrived in Minnesota.

Phillips now steps in as the direct roster replacement for Adams. At 6-foot and 195 pounds, the Long Beach, California, native brings college experience that included time at Tennessee State before transferring to San Diego State.

In two seasons with the Aztecs, he played 24 games and posted 74 tackles along with two interceptions and 10 passes defended. His older brother, Clark Phillips III, reached the NFL earlier after the Atlanta Falcons selected him in the fourth round of the 2023 draft.

The addition comes as the Vikings continue evaluating their secondary heading into the regular season. Many observers view the unit as one of the thinner groups in the league right now.

Neither of the projected starting outside corners, James Pierre or Isaiah Rodgers, ranks among the league’s elite cover men. Rodgers did post a solid 73.8 grade from Pro Football Focus during the 2025 season, showing steady improvement.

Depth behind them remains a concern. Dwight McGlothern Jr., an undrafted free agent from 2024, has yet to start an NFL game. Rookie Charles Demmings also sits as a projected backup without prior starting experience.

The brightest spot in the cornerback room is Byron Murphy Jr., the former 33rd overall pick who plays in the slot. He earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2024 and provides reliable coverage in the middle of the field.

An optimistic scenario for Minnesota would see Murphy maintain his high level of play while Rodgers continues developing into a stronger boundary option. Pierre would need to hold steady as a dependable No. 2 corner without major drop-offs.

Staying healthy will matter most for that group. The Vikings’ defense under coordinator Brian Flores relies heavily on aggressive blitzing, a strategy the team employed more than 10 percentage points above any other unit in 2025.

That approach can ease some pressure on the secondary by disrupting opposing quarterbacks. Yet as other teams grow more familiar with Flores’ scheme, the defensive backs will still face demanding assignments week after week.

Adams’ absence removes a veteran presence who had been expected to help stabilize the back end. Phillips arrives as a young player ready to compete for snaps and contribute wherever needed on special teams or in the secondary rotation.

The Vikings will keep monitoring their defensive backfield depth as the preseason continues and final roster decisions approach. For now, the focus remains on adjusting after the unfortunate loss of Adams and integrating the newest addition to the squad.
