A recent report revealed that Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell is serious about holding a "true competition" for the club's starting quarterback job involving free-agency signing Kyler Murray and 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy later this summer.
For a piece published on Tuesday, NFL insider Dan Graziano of ESPN suggested that O’Connell may want McCarthy to win the QB1 gig before September arrives.
"People I've talked to who are close to this situation insist that the Vikings haven't given up on McCarthy -- that part of their hope is bringing in Murray sends some sort of shock to McCarthy's system and gets him refocused on whatever they think he got away from last year," Graziano explained.
Injury setbacks limited McCarthy to just 10 starts over his first two pro seasons, and he reportedly had trouble grasping the playbook and understanding "the more elemental aspects of being the face of a franchise" after Minnesota let Sam Darnold reach free agency in March 2025.
However, Murray signed only a league minimum deal with the Vikings earlier this offseason. Thus, O'Connell has no financial reason to start Murray in Week 1 if McCarthy looks like a revelation from the start of training camp through the Vikings' final preseason game.
McCarthy seemingly having no real value as a tradable asset likely has something to do with why he's still with the Vikings this spring. Graziano expanded on why "it doesn't make a lot of sense" for Minnesota to sell McCarthy for pennies on the dollar before he participates in training-camp practices.
"The Vikings have already paid 70% of McCarthy's rookie contract," Graziano added. "There's no way they could get anything in return that remotely approaches what they spent in terms of draft capital to acquire him in the first place. They're less than a year removed from believing he could be their starter, not just now but for years to come. And it's not like Murray is some automatic fix, either. He has had one fully healthy season in the past five, and the Cardinals are paying him almost $36M this year to play for another team."
How McCarthy responds to the Murray challenge will likely impact the Vikings' quarterback plans beyond just the 2026 season. Then again, perhaps Murray will play well and stay healthy through January en route to earning a second contract from Minnesota.
