Vikings Sign Odell Beckham Jr. to Revitalize Offense

The Vikings are undefeated at 4-0, but their struggling offense has been a shocking development this season. Injuries to Kyler Murray and Justin Jefferson have hurt, but head coach Kevin O’Connell knows that excuses are not going to suffice.

As a result, the Vikings have signed Odell Beckham Jr. to their practice squad. NFL insider Jordan Schultz was the first to report the news that the Vikings are bringing in the former New York Giants star to potentially breathe some life into the offense.

Beckham was recently cut by the Giants after making the team in training camp.

The 33-year-old Beckham is an 11-year NFL veteran who has played with the Giants, Browns, Ravens, Dolphins and Rams during his career. He was a Pro Bowler in his first three seasons with the Giants, and he had his best season in 2015 when he caught 96 passes for 1,450 yards with 13 TDs.

He followed that up with 101-1,367-10 in 2016 and was clearly one of the best receivers in the league. Injuries impacted his production after that, but he did have back-to-back seasons with more than 1,000 receiving yards in 2018 (Giants) and 2019 (Browns).

Beckham became a highlight-film staple with his spectacular one-handed TD reception vs. the Cowboys in 2014.

The signing by the Vikings seems somewhat desperate because Jefferson has been out since the first quarter of their Week 3 game against Tampa Bay. Jefferson’s status has not been determined for Minnesota’s Week 5 game at New Orleans.

This signing is clearly indicative of a move to make the offense more productive. Beckham reportedly had a productive training camp with the Giants but he did not catch a pass in the three games he was active with New York.
