It is the toughest division in the NFL, but playing in the NFC North is not doing much to help the Minnesota Vikings.
The Vikings had been one of the most impressive teams through the first six games of the season and they were the last of the league’s undefeated teams. They took a 6-0 record into their Week 8 game with the Detroit Lions and they were competitive for 60 minutes.
However, the Lions unleashed an effective ground assault in the second half and the Vikings dropped a 19-15 decision at Ford Field.
While the Vikings are still in first place in the division with a 6-1 record, they have been viewed as perhaps the weakest team in the division.
That’s because their offensive attack has failed to deliver through their first seven games. Despite the presence of explosive wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison along with veteran running back Aaron Jones, the Vikings have the NFL’s 29th-ranked offense.
QB Kyler Murray has been unable to find any consistency leading the Vikings offense, and poor quarterback play is usually a guarantee that a team will not be able to contend for a championship.
Chicago (6-2) is just one-half game behind the Vikings in the standings, but after the Bears punished the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks Monday night in the Emerald City, there appears to be little doubt that they are the team to beat in the division.
Caleb Williams continues to be a dynamic leader on offense, playing expertly within head coach Ben Johnson’s system and throwing the ball accurately and with plenty of zip on a consistent basis.
The acquisition of Jeffery Simmons from the Tennessee Titans gives the Bears the kind of defensive dominance that had been missing.
Detroit (5-2) asserted itself in the win over the Vikings, and the Lions have righted themselves with three wins in a row since suffering a 32-26 loss to the Carolina Panthers in early October.
QB Jared Goff may have the best 1-2 punch in the division at the WR spot with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, while Jahmyr Gibbs is clearly a dominant running back. He is coming off a 153-yard effort against the Vikings.
The Lions appear somewhat vulnerable on defense, but Aidan Hutchinson is an outstanding pass rusher.
The Green Bay Packers (5-3) are currently in last place in the division, but they still appear to be a playoff team because Jordan Love is the best pure passer in the division.
The Packers could shoot past every one of their division opponents when edge rusher Micah Parsons returns to the lineup. He has an excellent chance to return later this month from the devastating knee injury he had at the conclusion of the 2025 season.
If Parsons comes back in top form, he could turn into a defensive destroyer during the most critical weeks of the season.
