Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell announced on Thursday that Carson Wentz will start in Week 9 in place of an injured Kyler Murray, who is “week-to-week” with a hamstring strain.

O’Connell emphasized that Murray’s injury is not thought to be long-term, adding that a stint on injured reserve is “not under consideration at all.” Holding him out of Monday night’s game against the Bills could be partially a precaution to avoid worsening the issue with matchups against the division-rival Packers and three competitive in-conference opponents over the next month. It is also worth noting that Buffalo’s ferocious pass rush injured all three of the Ravens’ available quarterbacks in Week 8.

Murray has played just well enough this year to help the Vikings to a 6-1 record to open the season. His passing numbers rank close to the bottom of the league, but he is averaging 5.8 yards per carry on the ground with zero turnovers. Minnesota’s elite defense has done the rest, a formula that could carry the team to the playoffs but will likely raise questions about their ceiling.

The Vikings’ pursuit of Murray this past offseason made it clear that Wentz was not a preferred starting option. But with Murray’s inability to get the offense off the ground, Wentz could make a case to remain the starter with a strong showing on Monday night. The two quarterbacks have each started six games in the last year with similar passer ratings and completion percentages. Wentz generally pushed the ball downfield more, leading to more yards, touchdowns, and interceptions, while also taking significantly more sacks.

Right now, Minnesota is winning by dominating the turnover margin and keeping pressure off of their offense. Wentz could make the passing game more explosive; he could also put the ball in danger and upset the careful balance O’Connell and defensive coordinator Brian Flores have found this year.

O’Connell declined to comment on Minnesota’s quarterback plans moving forward, indicating that the door might be open for Wentz to supplant Murray for longer than a week.
