Vikings waive promising young edge

The Minnesota Vikings have waived a promising young edge rusher as part of a roster shuffle.

On Wednesday, the Vikings cut rookie Gabriel Murphy, whom they'd activated from injured reserve just a day earlier.

Murphy was a summer standout but suffered a knee injury in the preseason that has sidelined him to this point. He officially returned to practice early this month and was on the final couple of days of his 21-day practice window.

That freed up a spot for the team to sign long-snapper Jake McQuaide from the practice squad to the active roster and bring back tight end Nick Muse on the practice squad after he was waived earlier this week. McQuaide had already been elevated on game-day three times, so he had to be moved to the active roster.

Murphy could come back to the Vikings via the practice squad if he goes unclaimed on waivers, although it wouldn't be surprising to see a team take a chance on his potential.

Additionally, it's unclear if the Vikings would create a spot for him anyway, given the team also needs a practice squad place for former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, who agreed to join Minnesota.

It's unfortunate the Vikings weren't able to see more of Murphy but here's hoping it works out for him going forward.
