Wide receiver Jauan Jennings’ market did not develop as expected this offseason, and he settled for a one-year, $8MM deal with the Vikings in early May. That appeared to represent strong value for Minnesota, who eyed Jennings as an accomplished complement to Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison.
However, Jennings has been targeted just eight times in his five appearances, and he recently surfaced in trade rumors. Both reports mentioning the possibility of a trade also mentioned the injury-ravaged 49ers – with whom Jennings spent the first six years of his career – as a possible landing spot.
Apparently, a Jennings-Niners reunion nearly came to pass. Per Jay Glazer of Fox Sports (via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk), Minnesota and San Francisco had a deal in place for Jennings, contingent upon Jennings getting on a Zoom call with 49ers GM John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. Jennings declined, thus keeping him with the Vikes for the time being.
To no surprise, the 49ers moved quickly in making a defensive tackle addition ahead of the trade deadline. San Francisco reunited with DeForest Buckner by sending the Colts a fourth-round pick. The team has enough draft capital and cap space available to move forward with other acquisitions. The receiver spot could naturally be an area of interest given the 49ers’ injuries at that position.
No big-ticket trades on that front are expected over the coming days. Even so, a depth move could help San Francisco’s health among receivers through the remainder of the campaign. Jennings, 29, would of course represent a familiar face given his familiarity with Shanahan’s offense. Based on today’s report, though, the former seventh-rounder’s preference is clearly to avoid returning to the Bay Area. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler confirms as much.
The Vikings entered Week 8 as the NFL’s lone remaining unbeaten team. One or more win-now trades leading up to the November 10 deadline would be sensible as a result. The running back and tight end positions in particular are believed to be of interest, and Minnesota could be Jonathan Taylor’s landing spot in the event Indianapolis winds up trading him. Even in the absence of a splashy addition, Jennings is not in line to handle a larger role in the passing game provided Jefferson and Addison remain healthy.
Despite that fact, it seems as though Jennings is content to remain in place through the second half of the 2026 campaign. If his production continues to be limited down the stretch, another tepid free agent market will no doubt be in store.
