Von Miller signing changes everything for this Commanders breakout hopeful

Von Miller is firmly at the end of his future Pro Football Hall of Fame career. However, the Washington Commanders believe there is some quality football left before potentially walking away from the gridiron for good in 2026.

Miller signed a one-year deal with the Commanders just before training camp, adding more to a dangerously weak pass-rushing unit. He might not be the dominant force of old, but he could provide a different dynamic if his reps are managed effectively by head coach Dan Quinn.

It's another major statement of intent from the Commanders. And nobody should be happier than one player aiming for more responsibilities in Year 2 of his professional career.

Commanders' signing Von Miller is great news for Javontae Jean-Baptiste's development

Javontae Jean-Baptiste was a seventh-round pick in 2024. He comfortably made the squad but was brought along gradually by the coaching staff. The former Notre Dame standout also missed a month of the campaign on injured reserve, which wasn't ideal.

Jean-Baptiste flashed when defensive reps came his way. It was far from perfect, but nobody expected it to be. He'll benefit enormously from the experience. However, what comes next is even more pivotal for his long-term outlook.

Having the benefit of Miller, one of the most accomplished edge rushers in modern NFL history, to lean on for advice and guidance is an exceptional tool. Jean-Baptiste would be wise to see the new arrival's counsel constantly over training camp and throughout the campaign. And considering this could be the veteran's final year before retirement, he'll only be too happy to pass on his wisdom.

While Jean-Baptiste doesn't have the athletic intangibles Miller brought to the table at the peak of his powers, he's got enough in his locker to be servicable. And despite the three-time All-Pro's arrival, the Commanders still need someone else to come to the fore and alleviate what remains a concern among fans.

Jean-Baptiste remains an unknown quantity of sorts. He logged a sack last season, but there is a lot of hard work ahead. He's explosive and can make things happen, so finding the consistency needed is the next challenge.

Washington's accomplished coaching staff will guide him every step of the way. But if Miller can also provide some useful insight that helps the second-year pro take his game to heights not seen before, that's only going to help the Commanders moving forward.

Miller is for the now. But if he assists Jean-Baptiste with his supreme expertise, the better Washington's future aspirations will be.
