When the Tennessee Titans officially introduced 1st overall rookie QB Cam Ward as the new face of their franchise last week, the team’s uniforms were a significant sideshow during the proceedings.

Ward most famously wore the number 1 in college, and as it became clear he was going to become a Titan weeks before the pick was eventually made, people wondered aloud if he would be allowed to wear it in Tennessee. Franchise legend and NFL Hall of Famer Warren Moon wore the number 1, and it was retired for the Oilers/Titans over a decade ago. Would Moon give him permission?

Not only did the legendary quarterback give Ward permission, but he showed up in-person to do so at his press conference. The number was officially un-retired for the star rookie.

In speaking with Moon once the official introduction ceremony was complete, he was asked about the Titans surprising decision weeks earlier to shelf their Oilers throwbacks for at least the 2025 season, and if that had anything to do with his decision. And as it turns out, it not only factored into his decision making; it seems to be directly related to what is happening behind the scenes in the Titans uniform department.

Moon first indicated that the Titans would be getting new threads at that presser, two Fridays ago. But he appeared again this past Friday, a week later. He went on Kay Adam’s “Up & Adams” show live from the Kentucky Derby, and addressed the topic once more.

Adams repeated Moon’s own words from the press conference back to him: “The Houston Oiler jersey will probably never be worn again”, saying this made it sound like the Titans would be getting redesigned uniforms in the near future.

Moon began by covering himself on the topic, making it clear he was making no promises.

“Well… I never say never about anything. In this world that we live in now, you can’t say ‘never’ about anything… because if I did say ‘never’ and it did happen, people would say ‘ahh!’”

But when Kay pushed once more, asking the question point blank, Moon relented: “the Tennessee Titans have new uniforms coming. A whole new set. And I’ve seen glimpses of them, but it’s not the Houston Oilers jersey.”

When asked what these new jerseys look like, Moon lit up with a wry smile and a laugh: “pretty good!”

“They fit with the times, but they’re also a little futuristic” he explained. “They will advance with the times.

So the picture seems clear: the Titans are transitioning away from their Oilers throwbacks after just two seasons in them, and it has everything to do with their jersey redesigns coming in the near future. It seems they’ll likely employ a Oilers-esque color palette, rendering the fantastic throwbacks moot. And that move, in large part, helped settle Warren Moon’s decision to grant permission to Cam Ward to wear the number 1.
