The Washington Commanders were one of the surprise teams of the NFL last season. However, one of the big weaknesses heading into the season for them is on the offensive line. While Quarterback Jayden Daniels is phenomenal, he can’t do much without a good offensive line. The Commanders decided to sign George Fant to help bolster the offensive line.
It is not confirmed how long or how much money Fant will be getting with this deal. However, with how close he got to signing before the season began, it’s likely a one-year deal with the Commanders organization. That is pretty fair, considering a 33-y ear-old player like Fant, who could potentially regress more. More will come out about it, but it sounds like it’s a prove-it deal.
The old saying is that knowledge and experience are power. Well, Fant has plenty of that as he has started a total of 75 NFL games throughout his long eight-year career . Fant has played for the Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans, and New York Jets at both left and right tackle. His experience will be useful to this young team, and he could be a great guide to rookie 1st-rounder Josh Conerly Jr.
Looking at the current depth chart, it is pretty telling. Laremy Tunsil will be the starting left tackle as the Commanders traded for him in the offseason. Josh Conerly was drafted in the 1st round, and he will be put at right tackle. Besides those two and mayb e Andrew Wyile, the Commanders’ tackle depth is not great. The Commanders needed a backup badly, and Fant fits the bill. It never hurts to get as much depth on the offensive line as possible.
This is still a really good signing for the Washington Commanders. Protecting Daniels is always a good idea, and adding to the o-line never hurts. Teams in the NFL need to remember what happens if they don’t do that, as they could be in the situation the Indianapolis Colts were when Andrew Luck chose to retire. The Commanders don’t want that to happen, and thus, they signed Fant to protect him. It’s a great move, and hopefully for the team, Fant is in football shape and can shake off any rust on the field.
