Washington Football Team officially changes name to Washington Commanders

The news may have been leaked a bit earlier than they intended, but the Washington football franchise officially revealed their new name on Wednesday morning.

It was 18 months ago that the organization dropped its former nickname and the temporary "Washington Football Team" was adopted. The Commanders are the first team to change its name without moving cities since the Tennessee Titans, who switched over from the Oilers in 1999.

In addition to the leaked images on Tuesday, former NFL quarterback Joe Theismann (who spent his entire 12-year career with  Washington) appeared to spoil the name of choice ahead of time on Monday during an CBS Sports Radio. In early January, the franchise announced Feb. 2 as its reveal date.

Washington finished the 2021 campaign with a 7-10 record. Their 2020 NFC wild-card game loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is their only appearance in the playoffs in the last six years.
