The Chicago Bears are spreading positive vibes during this preseason. First, the Bears beat the Cleveland Browns 34-10 in their first preseason game last Saturday.

Second, they are keeping the high energy as they look ahead to a season saturated with high expectations.

That lightheartedness showed up Thursday when head coach Ben Johnson joined an interview with his WR coach, Antwaan Randle El, per Waddle and Silvy of ESPN Chicago.

Johnson was asked about his first impression of Randle El as a player and coach, whom he first met when he was the head coach with the Detroit Lions.

“I knew him by reputation as well,” he said. “Phenomenal football player. I didn’t know much about him as a coach. But it took within the first couple of days to realize that this guy’s gonna be special, which he’s proven to be.”

Randle El played from 2002 to 2005. With the Pittsburgh Steelers, Randle El won Super Bowl XL over the Seattle Seahawks.

He began his coaching career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019. Randle El first worked with Johnson as the WR coach with the Lions from 2021 to 2024, when Johnson was the offensive coordinator.

When Johnson was hired as the Bears head coach in 2025, he brought Randle El along.

Meanwhile, Randle El was asked if he busts Johnson’s chops at all about the offense’s effectiveness last Saturday. Randle El responded:

“He told me right away you called him better, and I called the first half, so I left it at that.”

In the second half, the Bears overcame a 10-0 deficit with Randle El handling all the play calls. WR Kaden Davis finished the game with 88 receiving yards.
