Watch: Lions catch Chiefs off guard with early special teams trickery

Under the hot lights of Arrowhead Stadium, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell showed he had ice water in his veins early on in their opener against the reigning Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.

Facing fourth and short from inside their own 20-yard line with under 10 minutes to go in the first quarter, Campbell called for a fake punt, which linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin successfully converted.

Campbell's gamble would pay off 10 plays later with the Lions' first touchdown of the 2023 season. Quarterback Jared Goff found Amon-Ra St. Brown on 3rd and 6 from the Kansas City nine-yard line, giving Detroit an early 7-0 advantage.

Entering their matchup against the Chiefs as obvious underdogs, the Lions are pulling out all the stops to beat Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, and it should come as no surprise with Campbell leading the way. Since taking over as head coach, Campbell's aurora has begun to rub off on the team. Once seen as an afterthought or league-wide joke, the Lions have serious expectations this season for the first time in a long time, thanks mainly to Campbell.

While the tough talk and bravado might draw headlines, there's a method to Campbell's madness. The Lions' fake punt could've blown up in their face, but in a 0-0 game, it was a calculated risk that paid off in more ways than one.

The special teams' trickery not only led to points on the board but also kept Mahomes off the field for eight minutes and four seconds. There are few surefire ways to beat the Chiefs, but keeping Mahomes on the sidelines isn't the worst strategy in the world. ja
