Watch: Pat McAfee responds to Brett Favre lawsuit

Retired NFL player and current media personality Pat McAfee has responded to the defamation lawsuit filed by Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre.

"Brett Favre’s suing me in a defamation lawsuit, saying I defamed his name to try to earn a profit," McAfee explained during Friday's edition of "The Pat McAfee Show," as shared by the Barrett Sports Media website.

McAfee added that Favre's legal team demanded that any references to the retired Green Bay Packers star be removed from the former punter's digital library. McAfee insisted he would not comply with that request and will not offer a public apology to Favre.

It was learned on Thursday that Favre had filed defamation suits against McAfee, fellow Pro Football Hall of Fame member and current Fox Sports commentator Shannon Sharpe, and Mississippi state auditor Shad White. The legal action stems from statements made about Favre's alleged involvement in a welfare scandal regarding the building of a new volleyball center at the University of Southern Mississippi, his alma mater. Favre’s daughter featured for the school’s volleyball team when his alleged pushes for funding for the facility occurred.

John Barr and Anthony Olivieri of ESPN pointed out Thursday evening that Favre has never been charged with a crime in this matter, and the signal-caller has denied that he knowingly received welfare funds. Six others have faced criminal charges.

Specifically, McAfee referred to Favre as a "thief" who was "stealing from poor people in Mississippi" during the show that shares his name. The lawsuit also mentions tweets McAfee previously posted about Favre.

"A lot of people are wondering how my lawyers are gonna handle this," McAfee said on Friday. "You know it, I ain’t got ‘em. So let’s ride this f-----. I’m excited to see how it goes. I’ll see you in court, pal."

According to Barrett Sports Media, Gregg Giannotti of New York sports radio station WFAN suggested during Friday's edition of his morning show that he and co-host Boomer Esiason, a retired NFL quarterback, could also be targeted by Favre's legal team.

"Your networks will cover you," Esiason responded. "All they’ll say is 'Brett Favre is a public figure, this is a public story, we have commented on it and given an opinion on a public person.' I mean, he doesn’t have a leg to stand on I don’t think."

This past September, Good Karma Brands, SiriusXM, and The 33rd Team website were among the entities that distanced themselves from Favre over the scandal.
