Week 3 losers: Jets have QB problem, Cowboys red-zone failures

Not every player, coach and team can shine. With that in mind, let's look at some of the more unremarkable moments and performances from Week 3:

Zach Wilson, QB, New York Jets: Jets fans have seen this movie before and it does not have a great ending for them. Their defense played well enough to win on Sunday against the New England Patriots, but Wilson and the offense were completely incapable of helping them out and doing even the bare minimum to win.

Not only did Wilson complete just 18-of-36 passes for only 157 yards, he also took a safety late in the game to end the Jets' comeback hopes. Play like this is why the Jets tried to bring in Aaron Rogers this offseason.

Kevin O'Connell, head coach, Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings were given a gift late in the fourth quarter when Chargers head coach Brandon Staley elected to go for a fourth down deep in his own territory and watched as his team failed to get it.

Minnesota had an opportunity to score a game-winning touchdown but blew it when they missed an opportunity to clock the ball and give themselves three chances at the end zone. Instead, they tried to rush a play and it resulted in Kirk Cousins being intercepted to end the game.

Denver Broncos front office: What a mess. That is really the only way to explain this. The Broncos paid an obscene number of draft picks (and money) to build their team around Russell Wilson and Sean Payton and the result has been nothing but mediocrity.

On Sunday, that mediocrity turned into humiliation as they allowed 70 points to the Miami Dolphins in a staggering 70-20 defeat.

Sam Howell, QB, Washington Commanders: It might have been a small sample size (three games), but entering play on Sunday, Howell had never lost a game as the Commanders' starting quarterback. That changed emphatically in a 37-3 loss to the Buffalo Bills that saw Howell get intercepted four times.

He is far from a finished product, and also still an unknown as far as his potential is concerned, but this was an obvious "growing pains" game for the young starter. Buffalo is a top team with an excellent defense and it will have the potential to do that sort of thing to a lot of quarterbacks.

Dallas Cowboys red zone offense: The Cowboys were 12-point favorites going into Sunday's game in Arizona and ended up walking away with a 28-16 loss, a complete 180 from what we saw from them over the first two games.

The biggest culprit for Dallas was a red zone offense that 1-for-5 when it got inside the 20-yard line. This Dak Prescott interception late in the fourth quarter is the play that pretty much clinched the win for Arizona.

Daniel Jones, QB, New York Giants: Going back to Thursday we have to include Jones and the Giants offense here for that miserable display against the San Francisco 49ers. The Giants have played three games this season and in five of those six halves they have looked completely dreadful.

The only one where they even somewhat resembled the playoff team from a year ago was the second half against an Arizona Cardinals team that might be the worst in the league. Jones averaged just 4.3 yards per attempt and was intercepted once in Thursday's 30-12 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

J.C. Jackson, CB, Los Angeles Chargers: The Chargers were able to steal a win on Sunday in Minnesota thanks to a late interception. But the loss for them came before the game when cornerback J.C. Jackson was one of their gameday inactives.

The Chargers paid Jackson $82.5M over five years in the 2022 offseason with the hopes he could replicate the All-Pro level he played at with the New England Patriots. He has yet to come close to it, and on Sunday he did not even get a helmet for the game.

Chicago Bears offense: Maybe you want to blame quarterback Justin Fields. Maybe you want to blame the coaching staff. Ideally, you would blame everybody, because the whole operation is a mess.

The Bears offense is doing its part to set football back decades this season and was completely incompetent in a 41-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. This game was so bad that Fox cut away from a game featuring Patrick Mahomes and Taylor Swift to show a "more competitive game."
