Justin Fields isn’t sweating the Jets’ rough 0-4 start to 2025. Monday Night Football didn’t go their way, dropping a 27-21 loss to the Dolphins, but Fields is keeping it chill. Mid-week, he put things in perspective:
“We’re blessed, at the end of the day. You look at the bigger picture in life, we’re getting paid well to play a child’s sport.”
He’s separating the heat of NFL losses from the bigger picture, knowing the grind is still a privilege, not just a scoreboard.
The problem is that Fields’ composure comes as the Jets’ season quickly slips. The Dolphins’ loss exposed issues on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the Jets coughed up three fumbles, including one from Fields, despite passing 471 yards. Fields and Breece Hall each ran for 81 yards on the ground, contributing to the team’s 197 rushing yards. But mistakes and penalties erased much of that production.
Defensively, the Jets have collapsed under new head coach Aaron Glenn. Through four weeks, they rank 30th in EPA allowed per dropback and have surrendered 15 completions of 20+ yards, the third-most in the league. Opponents have scored at least 27 points in every game. On Monday, New York failed to record a single sack, leaving Miami’s offense largely unchallenged.
Fields’ individual stat line appeared strong at first glance. He went 20-of-27 for 226 yards with two total touchdowns and a 111.0 passer rating. Yet much of that production came late. Before two garbage-time drives, he had only 141 passing yards and no scores. Advanced metrics underline the concern. RBSDM placed him 24th out of 31 quarterbacks in EPA per dropback for Week 4 when adjusted for game context. Pro Football Focus gave him a 50.3 passing grade, ranking 28th.
A major issue remains Fields’ release speed. Against Miami, his average time to throw was 3.65 seconds, the slowest of any quarterback in Week 4. For the season, he leads the NFL with an average of 3.5 seconds, a career-high that puts him well ahead of second-ranked Caleb Williams at 3.26. The elongated release has consistently led to sacks, fumbles, and missed opportunities. Unless corrected, it risks defining his Jets tenure.
