From 2004 to 2008, one name carried an entire college football program: West Virginia's Pat White. A two-time Big East Offensive Player of the Year and three-time member of the first-team All-Big East, White led the Mountaineers to national prominence.

On Wednesday, West Virginia football announced White would be returning to the program as the team's assistant quarterbacks coach and assistant to the head coach.

The 38-year-old coach was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. White was the first college football quarterback to start and win four consecutive bowl games, and he finished his collegiate career with the most career rushing yards for a quarterback (4,480). He leads West Virginia in total offensive yards in a career (10,529).

In four seasons at West Virginia, he passed for 6,049 yards, 56 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. He rushed for 4,480 yards and 47 touchdowns. White led the Mountaineers to a 42-9 record.

White will reunite with his former head coach Rich Rodriguez. "Rich Rod," also a West Virginia alumnus, was the Mountaineers head coach from 2001 to 2007.

“It’s really special to welcome Pat White back to Morgantown as a member of our football coaching staff,” Rodriguez said. “He has been involved in some of the biggest wins in program history, and he will be a great presence in our quarterback room. Pat and I have been through so much together, and I am really proud of the quality of coach and mentor to young players that he has become.”

Rodriguez rejoined West Virginia in December.

White was an offensive assistant for the Los Angeles Chargers from 2022 to 2023. He also held positions with Alcorn State, South Florida and Alabama State from 2018 to 2021.

A second-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, White retired from professional football in March 2015.
