A lot was on the line for the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night as they faced off against the Houston Texans in a home game at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs suffered a tough loss in their last game, falling to the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day, 31-28. Kansas City dropped to 6-6 after that loss, which significantly reduced its playoff chances.
Unfortunately for the Chiefs, they suffered another defeat on Sunday against the Texans. Patrick Mahomes had arguably his worst performance of the season, finishing with 14-of-33 completed passes for 160 yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions. With the three-time MVP struggling, Kansas City fell to the Texans, 20-10.
According to a prediction model from NFL.com, the Chiefs’ playoff hopes dropped to just 35% after their loss to Dallas. It wasn’t exactly the end of the world for Mahomes and Co., but it underscored the importance of their Week 14 matchup against the Texans.
The Chiefs couldn't get it done on Sunday night, and the defeat has now resulted in a massive blow to their postseason hopes. A victory against the Texans would have improved their odds to 49%. However, those odds have now dropped to just 11%.
The Texans, on the other hand, took a significant step toward securing a playoff berth. Their chances have now increased to 85%.
The silver lining for Kansas City is that all hope is not lost. However, there's no denying that the odds are now considerably stacked against them with four games remaining on the schedule.
The Chiefs will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 14, against the Los Angeles Chargers. That will be another must-win game for Kansas City if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive. Kickoff from Arrowhead Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
