What Are the Dolphins’ Quarterback Options?
The local South Florida sports media, as well as national NFL pundits and insiders, have discussed that the new Dolphins’ front office is highly interested in backup quarterback Malik Willis of the Green Bay Packers.
And with Willis’ close connection with new head coach Jeff Hafley, with Hafley serving as the Packers’ defensive coordinator, working with Willis daily as the team’s scout quarterback, the sentiment is palpable.
Yet, what if Malik Willis, who is arguably the top quarterback prospect free agent in 2026, attracts a contract offer that is prohibitive to the salary cap money-starved Dolphins?
That will not be good news for our team, as the remaining choices are not nearly as attractive.
Derek Carr retired from football in 2024.
Carr has already said that he will only join a team if fully healthy and is contending for a Super Bowl.
Never mind the money, forget that idea,
Draft a mid-round quarterback in the draft, such as Ty Simpson from Alabama, second by a long shot to Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza?
A developmental project.
Go with a veteran such as Joe Flacco, Russell Wilson, or Kirk Cousins?
Only a very short stopgap and not worth the money.
Go with other NFL backups like Will Levis, Mac Jones, Jimmy Garoppolo, or Marcus Mariota?
Not very exciting either.
Kyler Murray?
Injury-prone and too small.
Keep Tua Tagovailoa, as we have to pay him anyway?
Hell, no!
Too many physical limitations , as we should not have “shown him the money!”
His play, and frankly, attitude, sucked after that.
We can either pursue Malik Willis, who has upside, is young, and has the ball skills we have not seen in Miami for years, or wait until 2027 to draft a quarterback and hope for the best.
