What happened to Calvin Johnson after the former Detroit Lions superstar retired from the NFL? Known as “Megatron,” Johnson was one of the most dominant wide receivers of his generation and built a legendary career in Detroit. Since stepping away from football, however, Johnson has largely stayed out of the NFL spotlight. Here is what happened to Calvin Johnson, why he retired, and what the former Lions star is doing now.
Calvin Johnson retired from the NFL after the 2015 season, ending a remarkable nine-year career with the Detroit Lions. The former No. 2 overall pick quickly established himself as one of the league’s most dominant wide receivers and earned the nickname “Megatron.”
Johnson finished his career with 731 receptions, 11,619 receiving yards, and 83 touchdowns. He was selected to six Pro Bowls, earned three First-Team All-Pro selections, and set the NFL’s single-season receiving yards record with 1,964 yards in 2012.
Despite still being one of the NFL’s premier receivers when he retired, Johnson walked away from football at just 30 years old. His sudden retirement left many fans wondering why one of the league’s biggest stars decided to leave the game so early.
Johnson’s decision to retire was largely driven by the physical toll of playing in the NFL. Johnson dealt with injuries throughout his career, including issues with his knees, ankles, fingers, and shoulder. He also underwent multiple surgeries during his time with the Detroit Lions.
Johnson later explained that concerns about his long-term health played a major role in his decision. He discussed suffering multiple concussions during his career and said the pain and injuries made it increasingly difficult to continue playing at the level he expected from himself.
The Lions’ lack of postseason success was another factor. Detroit made the playoffs only twice during Johnson’s nine seasons, and the receiver later acknowledged that he did not see a realistic path to a Super Bowl with the team. In 2017, Johnson said the decision ultimately came down to both the Lions and his physical condition.
Johnson officially retired in March 2016 after the 2015 season. He was only 30 years old, but he had already decided that continuing to play was not worth the physical cost.
Since retiring from the NFL, Johnson has remained busy with several business and community ventures. He has continued living in Michigan and has focused much of his time on business rather than returning to football.
Johnson is a co-founder and CEO of Primitiv, a Michigan-based cannabis company that he started with former Lions offensive lineman Rob Sims. In 2026, Johnson has remained involved with the company as it expands its cultivation and product operations.
Johnson has also remained connected to football through his foundation and work with younger players. He has previously worked with receivers at different levels while also spending more time with his family and pursuing business opportunities.
Johnson was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history. He remains the Detroit Lions’ career leader in receptions and receiving yards.
