What happened to former Pro Bowler Phillip Lindsay?

The Indianapolis Colts announced Thursday that RB Phillip Lindsay has been released from the practice squad. Lindsay was brought into Indianapolis to fill the role of injury troubles the Colts faced with Jonathan Taylor and recently traded Nyheim Hines.

Per NFL Insider Field Yates, Lindsay was dropped in favor of young special teamer Jake Funk.

Lindsay appeared in three games for the Colts this season completing 15 carries for 49 yards and six receptions for 19 yards. Lindsay's time with the Colts was short as this was the second time this season that Lindsay had been released by the Colts. The Colts originally cut Lindsay when they were finalizing their 53-man roster at the beginning of the season.

Lindsay used to play a major role for the Denver Broncos' offense in the 2018 and 2019 seasons where he recorded back-to-back 1000-yard rushing seasons. He was the first undrafted offensive rookie to make a Pro Bowl appearance. His ceiling was high and he was regarded as a future star, but his opportunities started to fade as his production was starting to decline after the 2020 season.

He hasn't been able to live up to that quality as he kept moving from team to team as he couldn't maintain a solidified roster spot. Lindsay will return to look for other practice squad spots as he continues to try and make another NFL active roster.
