What if Tua Asks Out of Miami After the Season?
There is a ton of reporting right now about what Miami will do next season with Tua Tagovailoa.
Will they keep him?
Will they cut him? If so, will it be before or after June 1st to split the cap hit up?
Will Miami look to trade him?
Will Miami re-work his contract and eat some money on it to make it easier to trade?
Nobody knows at this time, but one thing nobody is considering is what if Tua asks out of Miami after the year?
What if he tells Stephen Ross he doesn’t want to return to the Dolphins in 2026 and asks for a trade or to be released?
If you’re the Dolphins, the last thing you want is to keep him here against his will and the drama that will cause.
He also takes the decision out of your hands if he asks out of Miami, meaning he made the decision for you if you were considering keeping him beyond this season.
I mean, sure, you could force him to stay, but that will not be a pleasant environment for the new general manager and head coach, and what do you gain by that?
And who would blame Tua if he does ask out of Miami after this season?
The general manager who drafted him is now gone.
The head coach with whom he got along best has one foot out the door and is about to be fired.
Even if the Tua-McDaniel relationship isn’t all that great these days or what it once was, it’s still someone with whom Tua has had his most success, who is now gone.
This organization put Tua through the entire Deshaun Watson debacle a few years ago and openly tried to replace him in front of the world, embarrassing him.
There have been reports that players in Miami’s locker room don’t respect Tua as a leader.
I mean, Tua’s comments at a press conference recently, where he threw teammates under the bus, didn’t go over well with other players on the team from numerous reports.
If you’re Tua, do you want to stay in Miami?
Is he happy here?
I mean, yes, he is happy with the money, but is it fun being a part of this organization still?
The contract is the contract; even if he asks out of Miami, it’s not like he will have to take a pay cut.
Does he want to stay in Miami when all the chatter is even if the Dolphins keep you, it’s only because they can’t move on from your contract, and they really don’t want you so they are tolerating you for one more season.
They are just counting down the days that they can cut you.
Does Tua want to be somewhere where he clearly isn’t wanted?
Does Tua want to play for a third head coach in Miami and a second general manager, both of whom didn’t draft him?
Why put yourself through that when you can force your way out and go to a less toxic situation and get a fresh start?
Again, I have no idea what the Dolphins will do with Tua after the season. Much of the new reporting from Ian Rapoport and other NFL Insiders suggests that all options are on the table, and Tua may not have a long-term future in South Florida.
However, Tua (and his agent) can take control of the situation if they request a trade or to be released after the season and publicly express their displeasure, indicating a desire to go elsewhere.
It’s the one aspect of this that nobody is talking about, which may become a reality soon.
