With the Baltimore Ravens reportedly finalizing a trade for Jacoby Brissett, it is a clear indication that the team wants to stabilize its quarterback position for the remainder of the season. With Lamar Jackson set to miss at least four games due to a thumb injury and Tyler Huntley reportedly out for the season with turf toe, relying solely on rookie signal-caller Joe Fagnano would be a risky bet. Bringing in someone who is a known commodity could provide a stable floor for the Ravens’ offense.
As an 11-year veteran with experience starting in a variety of offenses, Baltimore will know what it is getting with Brissett. His numbers are down this season: 1,719 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. However, he does bring something different compared to Huntley and Fagnano.
Huntley serves well as a backup due to his mobility and ability to minimize turnovers; however, the offense becomes more limited through the air, making it difficult to consistently put points on the board. Over their last three games, Baltimore has not scored more than 13 points in a contest. Meanwhile, Arizona has averaged 21.9 points and 239.3 passing yards per game with Brissett starting all eight games. Neither statistic will light the world on fire, but those numbers suggest the veteran has experience directing a more productive passing attack than Baltimore has managed in recent weeks.
That passing production could come from Brissett’s willingness to take risks. Per NFL Savant, Brissett ranks in the 100th percentile in aggressiveness (the percentage of throws into tight windows) at 23.6%, compared to Huntley, who sits at 11.3%. Brissett’s aggressive style comes with a greater risk of interceptions, and he has a lower passer rating than Huntley. However, his willingness to challenge tight coverage offers a stark contrast to Huntley, who tends to favor shorter, safer completions to keep the offense moving.
With a playmaker such as Zay Flowers, Brissett could make better use of his abilities by taking more risks than Huntley while providing more experience than Fagnano. The hope is still that Jackson will return after recovering from his thumb injury, but Brissett could be relied upon to keep the team afloat in the meantime.
