Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin continues to be the subject of trade rumors as he remains in the final year of his current contract.
During a Wednesday appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show," NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic revealed what other teams have heard about McLaurin's availability during the early days of training camp.
"I can tell you they're not trading him," Russini said, via Zach Bachar of Bleacher Report. "That's not on the table at this moment. Teams have inquired over the last few months, and they've all been told 'no.'"
For a piece posted on July 15, CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin linked McLaurin with the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets.
McLaurin initially elected to stay away from the Commanders during the start of training camp, but he reported to the club on July 27. He hasn't been an active participant in team practices while dealing with "some sort of ankle injury" amid his desire for a lucrative extension.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said that McLaurin may not accept less money than what was attached to the five-year, $150M deal that the Pittsburgh Steelers handed wide receiver DK Metcalf in March. That said, Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton recently left some money on the table when he agreed to a four-year, $92M extension. Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic thinks "the Commanders may view Sutton’s contract as validation for offering a lesser deal" to their No. 1 receiver.
Washington has multiple reasons to want to hold onto McLaurin until further notice. He emerged as the favorite target of quarterback Jayden Daniels as Daniels guided the club to the NFC Championship Game and earned Offensive Rookie of the Year Award honors for last season. McLaurin finished the 2024 campaign with team highs of 82 receptions and 1,096 receiving yards. He was second in the entire NFL with 13 touchdown catches.
Additionally, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Commanders sixth among the betting favorites at +1800 odds to win Super Bowl LX as of Thursday morning. That says a great deal about why Washington won't want to weaken its passing attack ahead of the upcoming season.
There's plenty of time for the Commanders and McLaurin to come to an agreement before Washington opens the campaign with a matchup against the New York Giants on Sept. 7. For now, it seems teams looking for receiver help shouldn't view McLaurin as a legitimate option.
