What the 49ers like about QB Carter Bradley

The San Francisco 49ers showed confidence in newly signed quarterback Carter Bradley on Monday by waiving Tanner Mordecai, who spent last season with the team. The departure was part of a series of roster moves as the 49ers deal with multiple sidelined players during training camp, prompting the addition of five new players.

On Sunday, assistant coaches spoke to reporters, and quarterbacks coach Mick Lombardi shared what stands out about Bradley, the son of assistant head coach Gus Bradley.

"Carter came in here, he's got a great personality," Lombardi said. "He has a relationship with [QBs] Mac [Jones] and Brock [Purdy] from working out in Jacksonville (during the offseason) and stuff like that. I think Mac and Carter kind of grew up in the same area in Jacksonville, actually, oddly enough.

"So he's fit in the room great. He's a great kid. Meeting with him has been a lot of fun, and then getting him out on the field, he's got a skill set that we kind of thought we want to try and look at and develop."

Bradley entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024 after a college career at South Alabama and Toledo. In two seasons with South Alabama, he threw for nearly 6,000 yards, recording 47 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. However, he has yet to take a regular-season NFL snap.

"It's been fun having him, but it's been fresh," Lombardi added. "I look forward to get him out there next week and then moving forward with him in the preseason."

The release of Mordecai leaves the 49ers with quarterbacks Purdy, Jones, and Carter. However, head coach Kyle Shanahan prefers carrying four quarterbacks during training camp, meaning Mordecai could return once injured players get healthy.
