What Titans' Cam Ward changed following shoulder injury

Second-year Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward has spent portions of his first offseason with new head coach Robert Saleh recovering from the AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder that Ward suffered during Tennessee's Week 18 game this past January.

According to Jim Wyatt of the Titans' website, Ward said while speaking with reporters on Thursday that his shoulder feels fine. Ward also addressed certain changes he made following his rookie season.

Cam Ward wanted to improve his durability after shoulder injury

"I'm trying to get a little bit leaner, and then just trying to stay durable for a long season," Ward explained. "It's really watching the calorie limit, watching the amount of protein and the amount of carbs I need to put in, and what is best for my body and how I feel. I just think (the weight loss) will help me with durability, being faster, getting up in the pocket, and then just trying to play at my speed and not no one else's speed."

Former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll was a big Ward fan ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft and is now serving as Tennessee's offensive coordinator. The hope among those running the Titans is that Daboll can help unlock the best of Ward's abilities, but that likely won't happen if the 23-year-old misses significant time due to a setback this coming fall.

"It's been going great, getting the timing with the receivers and learning the width, and where I need to sit in the pocket for the O-line," Ward said about getting comfortable in Daboll's offense. "It's been good, so (I need) to continue to learn the install with coach Daboll, and continue to get better."

Robert Saleh gives big Cam Ward health update

The fact that Daboll said earlier this month that 2023 second-round draft pick Will Levis is getting "a fresh start here with us" caused some to wonder if Ward's shoulder issue could be a bigger concern than outsiders realized. On Thursday, Saleh attempted to silence such chatter.

"His arm's perfectly healthy," Saleh said about Ward. "He's slinging the ball. I mean, he's got some good velocity on it. And just like everyone else, learning the system. But so far, so good."

It remains to be seen how Ward's shoulder will hold up as he continues throwing footballs from the end of springtime workouts through training-camp practices.
