When Will G Kevin Zeitler Crack Packers’ Lineup?
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

The Green Bay Packers have added several veteran offensive linemen over the past several weeks in an effort to bolster a unit that has struggled and been riddled with injuries. The most intriguing signing was former Pro Bowl guard Kevin Zeitler, but he has yet to see the field, and may not again in Week 5 against the Chicago Bears.

On Tuesday, Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich wouldn’t confirm whether or not Zeitler would play on Sunday.

“I obviously anticipate him helping us out at some point in the near future, but I don’t want to say that he’s going to play this week,” Zeitler told reporters via the Packers. “He might, but we kind of got to evaluate that as we go.”

Stenavich didn’t rule Zeitler out for the Bears game. However, it doesn’t sound like the veteran is any closer to cracking the Packers’ lineup.

“It’s still kind of a work in progress as far as the guy hasn’t been doing stuff for a while,” Stenavich said. “He had one day in pads last week, and he didn’t take any team reps because he didn’t really know what was happening yet.”

The Packers OC could be playing coy, or Green Bay may want to give Travis Glover another shot after a promising start at right guard in Week 4. However, it’s more likely that Zeitler isn’t quite in game shape and needs to get more acclimated to the team’s system.

Latest Update Conflicts With Zeitler’s Comments Upon Signing With Packers

Perhaps it was unrealistic to expect the 36-year-old to play immediately. Maybe Zeitler, after 14 seasons in the league, overestimated himself. Either way, Stenavich’s comments contradict what the player himself said after joining the Packers.

Two days ahead of the Buccaneers game, Zeitler said he felt “amazing,” adding that he’d be ready to play if called upon. Now, heading into Week 5, it’s still uncertain when he’ll finally suit up.

It’s not crazy to believe Zeitler needs time to be game-ready. But considering how the Packers have looked despite their 2-2 record, they aren’t in a position to be too patient.

The offensive line took a positive step in Week 4, with Laken Tomlinson and Glover filling in at guard. However, even with a competent line, the Packers barely squeaked out a win over the only winless team in the NFC, and they won’t be playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers every week.
