Among the mostly embarrassing historical marks that the Jets reached this season, they also became the first NFL team since 2023 to field the same five offensive lineman for all 17 games. Their o-line was a bright spot this past year, and the young protectors stepped up big time. Nevertheless, their cohesion is at risk heading into the offseason.
John Simpson and Alijah Vera-Tucker, two candidates to start at left/right guard, are set to hit the market. Vera-Tucker made strides in 2024, but a torn triceps kept him sidelined for 2025. Joe Tippman occupied the right guard spot, and played very effectively. Meanwhile, John Simpson was the anchor at left guard. New York is set to lose a starting-caliber offensive lineman either way, and is forced to make a decision.
The choice between the two ultimately comes down to quality vs availability. John Simpson’s play has been on the decline, and while he can still hold his own, one must question how long it takes until his body wears down. In contrast, Vera-Tucker’s slowly cemented himself as a very capable interior protector. In 2024, he had a career year, posting a PFF grade of 77.7, marking him 10th among all guards. That year, Simpson’s grade was in the same ball park with 77.3, but declined to a grade of 56.9 this season. Vera-Tucker is younger, shown more promise, and looks set to be a member of the Jets for a while.
However, in three of his four years as a pro, Vera-Tucker has suffered a season-ending injury. Meanwhile, John Simpson’s currently on an Iron Man streak, being in tip-top shape for two seasons in a row. Sure, Vera-Tucker has higher upside, but what’s the point of that upside if he’s unable to stay on the field?
It’s a complicated process, and the Jets front office needs to take every factor into account before coming to a conclusion. Of course, they can always let both players walk and draft a replacement, but that’s a lot easier said than done. Whatever happens, New York’s going to lose a very capable offensive lineman.
