Only one team has been perfect. The 1972 Miami Dolphins made it through a 14 game regular season and then added three playoff wins including Super Bowl VII. Since then, teams have flirted with the perfect season though none have succeeded. And each year the remaining 1972 Dolphins celebrate their top of the mountain feat.

So far this season, three teams remain unbeaten – Minnesota Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. Oddly, the 2026 Dolphins have lost to each team.

Chances of Staying Undefeated

  • Historical Precedent: No team has completed a modern 17-game NFL regular season undefeated, and only the 1972 Miami Dolphins went completely untied and unbeaten in the 14-game era. Mathematically, historical statistical models give any team less than a 1% to 2% chance of going 17-0.
  • San Francisco 49ers: Sitting at 5-0 after tough early wins against Seattle and Los Angeles, they possess one of the league’s top point differentials (+61). However, lingering roster injuries and upcoming divisional tests lower their probability of running the table to slim single-digits.
  • Minnesota Vikings: At 5-0, the Vikings are carrying a dominant defense under Brian Flores, though analytical metrics rank their overall offense lower (27th in yards/EPA). Their upcoming schedule features a brutal stretch after their bye (including matchups against the Lions, Bills, and Packers), making a full-season sweep unlikely.
  • Kansas City Chiefs: At 5-0, the Chiefs have the pedigree and championship consistency under Patrick Mahomes, giving them statistically the highest weekly survival odds among the three. Even so, navigating a full 17-game gauntlet without a slip-up remains a steep longshot.

Will 11 more games to go, each one has a daunting task to even think about staying perfect much less finding a way through the post-season untouched. The 72 Dolphins will more than likely remain perfect and alone for another season. Put the champagne on ice, it’s only a matter of time until the corks are popped to celebrate the only ever perfect NFL team – the 1972 Miami Dolphins – 17-0.
