Why critical Cam Ward comments are a good thing for Titans

On Wednesday, ESPN Titans reporter Turron Davenport wrote about comments rookie quarterback Cam Ward made after a lackluster practice session, where the No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 Draft took accountability for the offense's "very mid" start to training camp.

It's the type of message the Titans should want to hear from a player they selected to be the next face of the franchise.

"At the end of the day, it starts with me," a candid Ward told reporters. "I have to get on the same page with my receivers, watch more film and be more accurate with the football," Ward added.

Instead of being alarmed by Ward's less than stellar training camp start, the Titans should feel relieved by his comments on his and the offense's struggles.

It's much easier to fix timing and chemistry issues than to a player's personal makeup, and Ward seemingly has the right demeanor to take on the QB1 role.

Head coach Brian Callahan expressed confidence in his rookie quarterback, with Davenport noting he said before practice, "It's just sort of how he's wired. I feel really good about how he'll respond to any negativity in general."

Ward took a circuitous path to the NFL, beginning his collegiate career in 2020 at FCS Incarnate World, where he played his first two seasons before transferring to Washington State (2022-23), followed by a fifth-year senior stint at Miami, where he was a 2024 Heisman finalist.

He was overlooked out of high school, going unranked in the 2020 class, per 247Sports.

For a player who wasn't guaranteed anything entering college, Ward already knows these things take work. And the Titans have a ton of work to do.
