Why Mike McCarthy Should Be the Next Dolphins Head Coach

Mike McDaniel isn’t going to survive a poor 2025 Miami Dolphins season.

The sharks are out, the fans have turned against him, and his quarterback is regressing under his tutelage.

Whether he is fired in season or after the season really is a moot point; the fact is, he won’t survive this.

A loss to the Jets next Monday night in front of the world on ESPN Monday Night Football will only speed up this process.

A win vs the lowly Jets will prolong the agony.

This 2025 Dolphins team is poorly coached and plays with a lack of fire and enthusiasm.

Turn on any other NFL game, and you see teams running around, flying, having fun, playing like their hair is on fire.

Turn on a Dolphins game, and you see a team that lacks energy and plays with no emotion.

Sure, every now and then you may see a glimpse of it, but for the most part it’s a team that looks like they are “on the clock” at work, waiting till it’s time to clock out.

And they are 0-3, and truly, that is the only thing that matters.

The NFL is a results-oriented league; you either win or you’re fired.

Who Will Be Next

That leaves the question: Who should be the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins?

I know there is a wide range of opinions, and I will go over some of the more popular ones over the next few weeks and give my opinion on the matter.

But the one I am going to start with is my favorite of those I want to see get the job.

Mike McCarthy.

I know some Dolphins fans will groan and say, I don’t want him.

Well, have an open mind.

Since Dave Wannstedt, the Miami Dolphins have not hired a head coach who had previous NFL head coaching experience.

That was 25 years ago.

The Dolphins keep chasing the “new toy,” or the “next Shula,” or “the next big brain” of who is going to be a genius and be the next great head coach.

Didn’t work with Nick Saban, Cam Cameron, Tony Sparano, Joe Philbin, Adam Gase, Brian Flores, or Mike McDaniel.

If they go down this road again of hiring someone who has never been an NFL head coach before, they will get the same result!

It’s time to hire someone who already has the job training and won’t take a year or two to “learn how to be an NFL head coach.

McCarthy has 18 years of NFL head coaching experience.

His winning percentage is .608

A 60% winning percentage!

As a Dolphins fan, I would cut off my pinkie toe to have a head coach win 60% of his games.

In those 18 years, do you know how many times his teams won the division? 8

Miami has won the AFC East once since 2001, and that was in 2008!

Do you know how many times a Mike McCarthy team came in 2nd place in the division? 5

That means in 13 of his 18 years, his teams came in 1st or 2nd place in his division.

Forget cutting off my pinkie toe, I would cut off my left leg to have the Dolphins do that.

And oh, by the way, no team has ever coached and come in last place in the division.

Developing Young Quarterbacks

The Dolphins will be in the market for a new quarterback here soon, as Tua Tagovailoa is regressing at a rapid rate.

McCarthy helped build Aaron Rodgers into the Hall of Fame player he was some twenty years ago.

And Dak Prescott had his best success in the NFL when Mike McCarthy came to Dallas, coached him up, and maximized his talents.

The next Dolphins head coach should have experience in developing a young quarterback and maximizing their talent, and there are few, if any, better suited to do this than Mike McCarthy.

Not an Exciting Hire, But the Right Hire

I know that signing Mike McCarthy as the next Dolphins head coach won’t have people jumping for joy.

It’s Mike McCarthy, I get it.

With that said, that’s the point: it’s Mike McCarthy.

The Miami Dolphins, for far too long, have been unable to land a proven NFL head coach.

Either they don’t want to come here to be saddled with a general manager they didn’t want to work with (Jeff Ireland and now Chris Grier) or Stephen Ross’s reputation was so bad that it was viewed as a toxic job by any coach who had a solid resume.

This is the perfect time for a fresh start.

The Dolphins are likely to move on from their head coach and general manager.

And they are likely to have a very high draft pick, the way things look right now.

That is a perfect storm for the Dolphins organization to reverse this trend and land a big-name coach.

Like Mike McCarthy.

The resume speaks for itself; he is only 61 years old, and he can bring much-needed stability to this organization.

I’m not saying he will lead Miami to the Super Bowl, and if you are looking for the next head coach candidates and that is your only criteria, well, good luck unless you have a crystal ball.

What the Dolphins need right now is someone to come in and stabilize everything.

Be a calming voice and a calming influence.

Not the lunatic behavior of Brian Flores.

And not the romper room mentality of Mike McDaniel.

Someone who can build a professional coaching staff has a proven track record of success.

I know this type of hire won’t have fans excited, but it’s not about being excited.

It’s about finding the right man for the job at the right time.

And for the Miami Dolphins, Mike McCarthy fits the Dolphins like a glove fits a hand!
