Chuba Hubbard's return to practice could complicate a burgeoning Carolina Panthers rushing attack.
On Wednesday, the fifth-year back was back at practice after missing the previous two games with a calf injury.
In his absence, free-agent running back Rico Dowdle exploded, averaging 236.5 yards from scrimmage in wins against the Miami Dolphins (1-5) and Dallas Cowboys (2-3-1).
Hubbard's return could threaten an attack that went into hyperdrive while he was away.

ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported the team intends on giving both backs touches, which makes sense on the surface. Dowdle has been on a tear of late, while the Panthers gave Hubbard a four-year, $33.2 million extension last November.

The problem, though, is that strategy didn't work earlier this season. The two shared the backfield from Weeks 1-4, and neither put up big numbers. In Carolina's first four games, the team averaged 100.3 rushing yards per game and 3.9 yards per rush attempt.
Hubbard led the backfield with 53 carries for 217 yards, averaging 25.4 per game less than his breakout 2024. Dowdle, meanwhile, had a rough start, gaining 83 yards on 28 carries (three yards per attempt). Per NFL Pro data, he averaged 1.5 yards less than expected per carry.
Both backs have earned playing time, but their ability to coexist will be crucial to watch as Hubbard works his way back into the lineup. It will be up to head coach Dave Canales to give them enough opportunities while figuring out a rotation that works for each.
The Panthers have two quality running backs, which is an excellent problem to have. But if the duo offers similar production as from Weeks 1-4, Carolina might soon find that less is more.
