Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski seems prepared to stick with 40-year-old Joe Flacco as the club's starting quarterback even though Flacco has looked past-his-prime as the Browns fell to 1-3 on the season.
During Monday's edition of the ESPN "Get Up" program, former NFL head coach and current analyst Rex Ryan seemed to take some shots at Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders for the fact that Sanders remains third on the depth chart beneath both Flacco and 2025 third-round draft pick Dillon Gabriel.
"Shedeur Sanders — 'Why is Shedeur not in there?' Well, I don’t know," Ryan said during the segment, per Steve Samra of On3. "Are you sitting in the back of the meeting rooms with scout-team receivers? If you are, get your butt in the front. You probably would be starting. But this guy (Flacco) can’t play. He can’t play anymore. He couldn’t play eight years ago. He’s your starting quarterback? Give me an absolute break. We saw the difference that Jaxson Dart made with the Giants. This move has to happen."
StatMuse shows that Flacco was responsible for a league-worst eight turnovers on the season as of Monday morning. Per ESPN, he ended the final weekend of September ranked last in the league among qualified players with a 60.3 passer rating and 32nd out of 33 signal-callers with a 27.6 adjusted QBR.
That said, Sanders has been buried on the Browns' depth chart from his first springtime workout with the club through all of September after he took five sacks and completed just 3-of-6 pass attempts for 14 yards in Cleveland's preseason finale versus the Los Angeles Rams. Nevertheless, he recently made it known he feels he is "capable of doing better" than at least some of the starting quarterbacks in the NFL today.
"Something’s missing," Ryan added about Sanders. "Something’s missing with this kid. This kid talks — he runs his mouth like — 'I could be a starting quarterback,' with his arms crossed like this. Get your (expletive) in the front row and study and do all that. If I know, the whole league knows. Quit being an embarrassment that way. You’ve got the talent to be the quarterback you should be. You should be embarrassed that you’re not the quarterback."
Tony Grossi and Tony Rizzo of ESPN Cleveland speculated that Ryan must have some inside information regarding why Sanders seemingly isn't close to playing.
"Rex Ryan, he didn't just pull that out of nowhere... that is inferring that the kid is not working as hard as he should be," - @TheRealTRizzo on Rex Ryan's comments about Shedeur Sanders.

As of Monday morning, Flacco remained on track to start Cleveland's game against the 2-2 Minnesota Vikings that will be held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London this coming Sunday. It's unclear if Flacco or Sanders would serve as the Browns' QB2 in the event that Stefanski chooses to give Gabriel the nod for that overseas matchup.
