Long before cornerback Darius Slay joined the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this offseason, he featured for the Detroit Lions from 2013–2019 when Aaron Rodgers served as the Green Bay Packers' QB1.
Slay and Rodgers are now teammates with the Steelers. During a Thursday appearance on "The Mina Kimes Show featuring Lenny," Slay explained why he's hyped that the future Hall of Famer entered the summer as Pittsburgh's QB1.
"His arm strength’s still there," Slay said about Rodgers, per Brigid Kennedy of Sports Illustrated. "Of course, it's not like he's 20 [years old], but it's still the fact that he can still get the ball to a position where the receiver can make a play on it. I think he's a great addition because the fact that we got a younger guy that just got drafted from Ohio State, young guy, and he can really train him, help him get to where he's at. And bringing [DK Metcalf] along so [Rodgers] don't have to actually [go find a No. 1 receiver]. He got one that's right there and that's ready to go. It's gonna be fun."
Rookie Will Howard is the "young guy" referenced by Slay, and Howard recently touched upon how he received useful pointers from Rodgers during the 41-year-old's first week with the Steelers. Meanwhile, much has been made about what Rodgers does and doesn't have left in the tank while in the twilight of his career. It remains to be seen if he can stay healthy after he dealt with numerous physical setbacks last season, but he seemingly showed during Pittsburgh's mandatory minicamp that he can still toss the football with plenty of strength and accuracy.
"The fact that he done seen everything. It's not no coverage he's seen, not nothing he don't know. So that's just great for us," Slay added about what Rodgers can give a Steelers franchise that hasn't earned a playoff victory since the 2016 campaign. "I’ve been playing against him — we was in the same division for [seven] years ... Man, he's still doing what he does."
Rodgers seems to be a popular figure among Steelers players who have never before shared a locker room with the four-time regular-season MVP. Some of Rodgers' teammates could get to know him better during Pittsburgh's summer break if they accept his invitation to complete summertime workouts in Malibu ahead of training camp.
